In this guide, we have gathered the best tips for washing and taking care of your bathrobe, divided into the following areas:
How to wash your bathrobe
A bathrobe that is often used needs to be washed regularly. By washing the bathrobe correctly, you reduce wear and tear, maintaining its timeless design and quality.
All our cotton bathrobes should be washed in the same way. However, our thin linen bathrobes may be washed at a slightly higher temperature.
Wash your bathrobe in the washing machine
- Wash cotton bathrobes at 40 degrees. Linen bathrobes may be washed at 60 degrees.
- Wash in a full to half full machine to avoid damaging the cotton fibers.
- Wash the bathrobe together with similar colored textiles, so as not to risk the bathrobe being stained by other laundry.
- Do not use detergents with bleach or fabric softener. Bleach may alter the color of the bathrobe. Fabric softener creates a wax-like film around the cotton, which reduces its absorbency and increases the risk of threads being pulled out of the material.
- Be careful with the detergent dosage. If you use too much detergent, there is a chance that the machine will not be able to rinse everything off and you may get detergent residues on your bathrobe.
Wash your bathrobe by hand
You may try to remove minor stains from your bathrobe by hand. Use water and hand-wash detergent to remove the stain. It is important not to rub on the stain, as the velour is sensitive and it may cause the threads to tear.
If you do not have access to a washing machine, you can wash your bathrobe by hand, using a mild hand detergent. In that case, remember to do the washing in a large and clean container, and to rinse out the bathrobe several times, thoroughly, so that you get rid of all the detergent.
How to dry your bathrobe
There are many ways to dry your bathrobe: you can use tumble dryers, drying cabinets or air drying, both indoors and outdoors. No matter what your options are, however, it is important that you remove the bathrobe from the washing machine as soon as it has finished washing. Shake it out and stretch it lightly before drying the bathrobe.
Tumble dry your bathrobe
To make your newly washed bathrobe nice and soft, we recommend that you tumble dry it on low heat for 15 minutes, making it semi-dry. Afterwards, you should hang it up to dry. The tumble dryer makes the cotton terry soft and fluffy, and by only tumble drying on low heat and for a short time, you avoid the risk of your bathrobe shrinking.
Even our thin linen bathrobes may be tumble dried, using a gentle program and low heat. Use a drying cabinet
Your may use a drying cabinet to dry your bathrobe. Remember to let it hang as straight as possible to avoid creases.
Let the drying cabinet run on low heat for 15 minutes, so that the bathrobe is semi-dry. By using low heat and drying for a short time, you avoid the risk of your bathrobe shrinking.
Air dry your bathrobe – indoors and outdoors
If you do not have a dryer or drying cabinet, you may air dry your bathrobe both indoors and outdoors.
- Use a hanger, and stretch carefully in all seams to avoid creases.
- Keep in mind that indoor air drying should be done in a bathroom or laundry room, as these rooms are better ventilated and will absorb more moisture from the wet laundry.
- You may air dry your bathrobe outdoors all year round, as long as the air is sufficiently dry.
- Do not dry the bathrobe in direct sunlight, as it may cause the color to fade.
How to store your bathrobe
Our bathrobes are made to be used. Regardless of the time of day, you should always have a timeless and comfortable bathrobe at hand. Here are some tips on how to store your bathrobe in-between use:
- Hang your bathrobe in an airy space when not in use, preferably on a hanger.
- Avoid keeping the bathrobe folded in your closet.
- Keep the bathrobe easily accessible and adapted to your routine. Some will hang their bathrobe as a beautiful and practical interior detail in their bedroom. Others prefer to keep their bathrobe easily accessible in the shower or bathroom.
Taking proper care of your bathrobe
Taking proper care of your bathrobe will make it last longer. Here are our best tips for taking care of your bathrobe between washing and drying:
- Hang your bathrobe in an airy space when not in use.
- Regularly ventilate your bathrobe, or give it a shake outdoors.
- Take care of stains immediately. Do not allow dirt stains to dry up; instead, wash the bathrobe in the washing machine, or take care of smaller stains by hand as soon as they appear.
- In the event of an accident, where you get caught up and pull out a loose thread, it is important that you sever that thread. Never pull on it, as it may unravel and cause more damage to the bathrobe.
If you follow these simple tips, you will be able to enjoy your comfortable and lovely bathrobe for many years to come!
Frequently asked questions and answers regarding bathrobe care
Here are some answers to the most frequent questions we get from our customers, regarding the best way to take care of your bathrobe.
Will washing the bathrobe cause color bleeding?
It is normal for colored textiles that are made of natural materials to release some lint when you wash them the first couple of times, and these may cause color bleeding. Therefore, we recommend that you wash your bathrobe together with similar colored clothing. This will avoid the bathrobe staining onto other garments, as well as preventing other textiles from staining onto the bathrobe.
Will the bathrobe shrink in the washing?
It depends on the type of bathrobe you have:
Our cotton terry bathrobes will shrink slightly the first time you wash it, about 3-5%. Moreover, keep in mind that exposing the bathrobe to high temperatures during both washing and drying (tumble dryer and/or drying cabinet) may cause it to shrink. Therefore, wash the bathrobe at a maximum of 40 degrees, and run your tumble dryer or drying cabinet on low heat.
Our linen bathrobes are made of washed linen, which means they will not shrink when washed.
Should you wash all bathrobes from Pelle Vävare in the same way?
All our cotton bathrobes should be washed in the same way, at a maximum of 40 degrees.
Our linen bathrobes may be washed at a higher temperature, at a maximum of 60 degrees.
Can I use stain remover on my bathrobe?
We do not recommend using stain removers on our bathrobes.
Why should the bathrobe be washed at 40 degrees and not 60 degrees?
The cotton bathrobes will better retain their quality and shape when washed at 40 degrees; they may shrink if they are washed at 60 degrees. The bathrobes will be just as clean when washed at 40 degrees, compared to 60 degrees. Moreover, using a lower temperature will save energy and thus benefit the environment.
Our thinner linen bathrobes may be washed at 60 degrees if necessary, as linen can withstand higher temperatures.
Can I use fabric softener when washing my bathrobe?
We do not recommend using fabric softener when washing your bathrobe from Pelle Vävare. Fabric softener creates a wax-like film around the cotton, which reduces its absorbency and increases the risk of threads being pulled out of the material. You should also avoid using softeners on our linen bathrobes, in order to maintain the linen’s natural breathability.
Can I tumble dry my bathrobe?
We do recommend that you tumble dry our cotton bathrobes on low heat for 15 minutes, in order to make the fabric soft and fluffy. To avoid shrinkage, only let it dry half way, then hang it up to dry afterwards.
Even our thin linen bathrobes may be tumble dried, using a gentle program and low heat.
Can I iron my bathrobe?
We do not recommend that you iron the thick cotton bathrobes from Pelle Vävare, as flattening will be detrimental to the terrycloth.
However, our thin bathrobes in cotton and linen can be ironed.
